The firmware will only update with an original Apple SSD. You need to get an original 120gb Apple ssd upgrade it to High Sierra then you can put the OWC SSD back in. (Alternately, suggest a new SSD that would be compatible without the OS update but wouldn't cause problems updating once I was up and running?)

I guess my question is, what should I do from here? How do I get past that boot loop or otherwise install High Sierra/Mojave from scratch (without another working Mac from which to create the appropriate recovery media from)? Thanks in advance. If I begin the installation again, I can see that it wrote about 5.5gb of data to the SSD. I have tried removing the flash drive after the reboot, but it just flashes the missing OS question mark screen. I eventually managed to make a recovery USB drive with the High Sierra image on it, and it boots into the recovery menu as expected, can see the SSD, can begin the install, reboots, shows a progress bar.and then boots back into the recovery menu. I installed Mavericks to a 64GB sd card to see if I could update to High Sierra or Mojave and then do a clean install from there, but when I run the update from the app store it gives "An error occurs while updating firmware" error with either OS.

Since this had such an old version of mac os installed, it cannot fetch the latest OS in the internet recovery screen, only the original one. I can't even see it in the disk utility or command line. The problem is, this particular SSD isn't supported until High Sierra I guess. Since this computer came with Mavericks (10.9.5) it tries to load that. I ordered a replacement SSD from OWC, installed it, and tried to load Mac OS. Used the terminal to verify, the SSD was dead.

I checked in the disk utility, and it didn't see the 128gb SSD that should have been there. I attempted to use the recovery utility, but it didn't see a hard drive. That’s super cool.Okay, so I was given a 2014 macbook air that wouldn't boot- It gave the blinking question mark screen when I tried. I’ll just repeat that again: the new MacBook Airs (and the new Mac mini) can, with a completely bare hard drive, go out on the internet and get what it needs to install the whole operating system.

When you do this, it downloads the contents of the recovery partition to a RAM disk, letting you then use Disk Utility and/or kick off the Mac OS X installation process. If there is no recovery partition - say, for example, because you replaced the stock SSD a higher-capacity internal SSD, and it sees no other bootable partitions, when you hold down option at startup it will say “network install” and give you a popup to join a WiFi network. If you elect to install (or reinstall) Lion, the actual Lion installer is first downloaded from the internet the computer then reboots to continue the installation. You access this partition by either holding down cmd-R during startup, or by holding down option and choosing the partition from among the bootable volumes. This the same program that runs when you boot a Lion install disk directly, and which lets you restore from Time Machine, go to Disk Utililty, etc.

(Both require internet access, however.)Īs part of Lion installation, a small partition of the drive is created which contains “Mac OS X Utilities”. So, what happens if you need to reinstall your operating system?Īs it turns out, there are two built-in methods of reinstalling. The MacBook Air 2011 does not come with an installation CD or USB stick, and, as mentioned in a previous post, does not (for the moment) work with the standard version of Lion which Apple sells in their store, or any version of Snow Leopard.
